In November, Kathleen M. Anderson, JD'92, a partner at Barnes & Thornburg LLP in Fort Wayne, Ind., was elected to the board of governors of the Indiana State Bar Association (ISBA) at the association's annual meeting. Anderson will represent District 4 and her term will expire in 2011. Anderson is a member of the Allen County (past president), Indiana State and American bar associations. She also serves on the board of directors for the Fort Wayne Children's Zoo and various other not-for-profit health care, education and community organizations.

A significant case handled by Benjamin D. Arden, JD'05, an associate at Williams Mullen in the firm's Washington, DC office, was recently featured in the Wall Street Journal. Arden and his colleagues petitioned the United States Trade Representative (USTR) to file a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) challenging China's trade practice. The USTR granted the petition and the complaint was filed. The case will now proceed to dispute settlement before a WTO panel and the possible imposition of trade sanctions against China by the US and the EU.

In her new position, Autry will continue to lead the PCRO legal team, which provides legal, regulatory and state legislative support. Prior to joining Nationwide in July 2007, Autry served as Regulatory Counsel at State Farm Insurance Company.

In September, Barbara J. Baird, JD'77, an attorney in Indianapolis, was honored at Lambda Legal's 10th Anniversary Indiana Benefit Dinner for her extraordinary work to further equal treatment and recognition of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) civil rights both locally and statewide. Baird has been an active participant in the organization for over ten years.

Cynthia L. Bauerly, JD'98, was elected Vice Chair of the Federal Election Commission for 2010. Bauerly was nominated to the Commission by President George W. Bush and unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate on June 24, 2008. Prior to her appointment to the Commission, Commissioner Bauerly served in the United States Senate in the office of Senator Charles E. Schumer of New York as his Legislative Director, and as his counsel on the Senate Judiciary and Rules Committees. Her policy work while on the Hill included a variety of matters, including election reform, campaign finance, technology, telecommunications, intellectual property, antitrust, legal process reform, immigration, and ethics. Commissioner Bauerly has also worked in private practice in Minnesota and Washington specializing in complex litigation and appellate law, with a focus on intellectual property. She previously served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Florence-Marie Cooper of the United States District Court for the Central District of California and the Honorable Theodore R. Boehm of the Indiana Supreme Court.

His paper, titled The Behavioral Case for a Value-Added Tax, was one of 52 papers submitted by both JD and graduate law students from numerous law schools through the country.

- The Honorable Mitchell G. Brogdon, Sr., JD'86
In June, the Honorable M. Gino Brogdon, Sr., JD'86, who previously served as a Superior Court Judge in Atlanta, released his debut crime thriller novel, "Demons in the Crawlspace". He also recently attended the 40th Bouchercon mystery writer's convention in Indianapolis. With more than two decades in Atlanta's courtrooms, Judge Brogdon is a much sought after legal analyst who has appeared several times on CNN's "Nancy Grace Show". Judge Brogdon is an expert on family violence and child abuse. As a judge, he has presided over many such cases, elements of which he interweaves into "Demons in the Crawlspace". The book, which is the first of 11 books in his crime thriller series, has won praise from both the literary and legal community.

Charles A. Cohen, JD'66, a managing partner at the law firm of Cohen Garelick & Glazier in Indianapolis, was appointed to the Jewish Federations of North America’s Budget Committee. In the past, Cohen has served the organization’s board on the executive committee and as a representative for intermediate cities. Cohen focuses his practice in business and tax planning, estate planning, healthcare, and employee benefits. Prior to his current position, Cohen entered the U.S. Army, upon law school graduation, and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in a combat zone in Vietnam. In 2004, Cohen earned dual community honors. First, he received the Jerusalem Medal from the Israel Bond organization for service to Israel and was then appointed a Sagamore of the Wabash, the highest honor Indiana can bestow on a citizen.

He is also a member of the Indianapolis Inn of Court as well as the Indianapolis, Indiana and American Bar Associations.

Thomas L. Davis, JD'75, a senior partner at Frost Brown Todd LLC in Indianapolis, received The Honorable Paul H. Buchanan, Jr. Award of Excellence. The Buchanan Award is given to an Indianapolis Bar Association (IBA) member whose attainments as a lawyer have been notable, whose contributions to the Association have been unique, and whose honorable service to the profession has extended over a significant period of time. Davis' service includes the Indianapolis Bar Foundation Board of Directors and the IBA presidency. During his term as IBA president, Davis is credited with starting the annual Bench Bar Conference. He also served as IBA vice president and counsel to the board, and devoted time to the IBA's Young Lawyers Division and Litigation Section. Davis has served on the Indianapolis Legal Aid Society's Board of Directors for over a decade, and is currently its vice president. He is also currently serving his second term on the Indiana Pro Bono Commission.

In December, Aladean M. Derose-Smithburn, JD'78, an attorney in South Bend, Ind., received the Professor Thomas L. Shaffer Award of Exceptional Service Pro Bono Publico in recognition of her dedication to pro bono work. The award, which is presented by the Volunteer Lawyer Network, is given to an attorney who has contributed a significant number of hours to pro bono cases through legal services to disadvantaged populations in Saint Joseph, Elkhart, Marshall, and Kosciusko Counties in Indiana.

V. James Dickson, JD'77, was named Partner in Charge of Adams and Reese LLP in the firm's St. Petersburg, Fla. office. Dickson focuses his practice on construction law, environmental law and commercial litigation, representing owners, contractors, subcontractors and suppliers in all aspects of construction law, including bidding, contract preparation and negotiation, surety bonds, claim resolution, mediation, arbitration, and litigation. He further represents clients in a broad array of environmental matters concerning hazardous substances, contaminated property, Brownfields, asbestos, RCRA, CERCLA, and toxic torts. This includes serving on the steering committee at a number of Superfund Sites from 1984 through the present. Dickson has been recognized in Florida Super Lawyers 2006-2009, as well as Best Lawyers in America 2009-2010. Dickson is also an Adjunct Professor at Stetson University School of Law, teaching Environmental Hazards Associated with Real Property, which addresses common issues such as liability for contaminated soil and groundwater; control and disposal of hazardous wastes; the duty to report contamination; the scope of amnesty in Florida petroleum and dry cleaning programs; use of Brownfields’ incentives in the redevelopment of property; asbestos and lead regulations; risk allocation by contract or insurance. Dickson is also an active member of the bar and the community, receiving the Florida Bar Pro Bono Service Award, St. Petersburg Bar Pro Bono Award, National Association for Community Leadership, Distinguished Leadership Award and the Leadership St. Petersburg Alumni Association Leadership Award.

Fardy concentrates his practice in the area of intellectual property transactions and litigation and is a member of the Illinois State and Indiana State Bar Associations.

In November, Timothy J. Haffner, JD'85, a partner at Baker & Daniels LLP in Fort Wayne, Ind., was named a Volunteer of the Year by the Indiana Chamber of Commerce during an awards ceremony at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. The Chambers’ Volunteer of the Year Award honors individuals who diligently work with the Chamber for the betterment of the business community. Haffner, who started his legal career 24 years ago at Baker & Daniels, focuses his practice in business and corporate finance, economic development, and sports and entertainment. He has been recognized for his work in corporate law and mergers & acquisitions by The Best Lawyers in America. In addition, Haffner, a Fort Wayne native, helped start the Fort Wayne-Allen County Economic Development Alliance and the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership, an organization that markets a 10-county region and teams with local economic development organizations to attract new jobs and commercial investment to the area. He has served as chairman of both organizations, as well as being a past chairman and board of director with the Greater Fort Wayne Chamber of Commerce. Haffner has also served on the board of directors for Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Goodwill Industries and United Way of Allen County.

Judge Hoff is currently a member of the Indiana Judges Association and the Monroe County Domestic Violence Task Force.

An active member of the ISBA, Kolb has published more than 100 articles and books related to estate planning and administration.

In his new position, Lundberg will represent judges, lawyers and other professionals in disciplinary and licensing matters, ethics issues, malpractice cases and other matters of professional responsibility. Lundberg is a member of numerous professional associations, including the American, Indiana and Indianapolis bar associations. He is also a fellow of the Indianapolis and American Bar Foundations and served in recent years on the board of directors and as president of the National Organization of Bar Counsel.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mayer can be made to the National Parks Conservation Association.

Captain Jason L. Morris, JD'06, who recently returned from a six-month tour in Afghanistan, where he served as the judge advocate for Second Battalion, Third Marines, was recently featured in Real Clear Politics in an article entitled, "Success in Afghanistan Will Require Commitment for the Long Haul." During his time in Afghanistan, one of his jobs was to help build the "rule of law" in Nimroz Province and Farah Province in southwestern Afghanistan. By the time his unit left six months later, the Afghan national police were able to lead joint patrols with the marines. Morris counts the training of the police in Delaram as "one of the biggest successes for our battalion."

She represents owners, design professionals, construction managers, general contractors, subcontractors and suppliers across the country.

Jeffrey R. Pankratz, JD'91, Managing Director of Development Sourcing Advisors LLC, formed Justice Ventures International (JVI), a non-profit corporation whose mission is to secure freedom, justice and restoration for the poor and oppressed by strengthening "justice ventures", organizations that work to protect human rights and to promote development. Prior to his current position, Pankratz was Of Counsel at Venable LLP, where his practice focused on outsourcing transactions and development finance, including real estate equity syndications, community development lending, partnership law, microfinance, social venture capital funds, and tax credits. Throughout his career, he has been active in pro bono matters in the areas of human rights and development. Pankratz's initial exposure to India was in 2003 when he lived and work in southern India for the International Justice Mission, a Christian human rights organization, supporting its efforts to eradicate bonded slavery in that region. Prior to entering private practice, Pankratz served as the Director of Management and Organizational Development for Enterprise Community Partners in Columbia, Maryland, and as the Executive Director of the Community Development Law Center in Indianapolis, Ind.

Sarah M. Singleton, JD'74, was selected to replace Judge Jim Hall as a First Judicial Judge in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Singleton was appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the Senate in 2006 to serve on the Board of Directors for the Legal Services Corporation. LSC is the leading provider of civil legal aid for the poor in the United States. She is one of eleven members on the bipartisan board, appointed by the President. Singleton previously worked at the law firm of Montgomery & Andrews in Santa Fe, where she has been since 1985.
